It was fantastic to celebrate all this year’s great sporting achievements in Sports Assembly today.
There were many trophies and medals awarded! The rest of KS2 listened to the excellent captain reports, applauded all the winners and even sang some sports songs.
There are so many great sports clubs and sporting events that happen at Avenue, and most of these sports are team games. We are really proud of all children who have attended a sports club or have been in a sports team this year. Well done!
On Tuesday 15th July the Year 6 B team visited Cheam Park Farm Juniors for a friendly match.
During the first half, Avenue team demonstrated a really solid
defence and had some clear goal opportunities. During the second half, Avenue’s attack became more focused and scored 3 times while Cheam Park Farm scored once.
Cheam Park Farm 1 – 3 Avenue
Well done Year 6 B team !
Cheam Park Farm 0 – 4 Avenue
The game got off to an amazing start when our captain, Charlie, cracked in an amazing goal with a fierce shot that bounced into the goal off the underside of the crossbar. All in the first minute! Avenue maintained pressure throughout the game and the well organised defence controlled by vice-captain Robbie and ably assisted by Luke, Eloise, Teddy and Joshua S prevented Cheam Park from having a shot on goal for the entire match. Our midfield with Charlie in the centre and Joshua F, Danny and Harry on the wings fought hard throughout the match and generally got the better of their opposite numbers. Our second goal came when the Cheam Park goalkeeper dropped the ball and Harvey pounced and scored before anyone else on the field had realised what was happening. Harvey, together with Jonathan and Shrihari formed a formidable attack and harassed the Cheam Park defence relentlessly.
Much to our delight a move rehearsed on the training ground produced our third goal. From a corner, Joshua F ran into space so that Charlie could play the ball directly to him. Joshua then played the ball quickly across the goal to find Jonathan ready to nonchalantly strike the ball into the net. 3-0 was the half time score.
The second half produced no further goals until a masterful substitution by the coach released Joshua F onto the pitch to support our attackers. No sooner had that happened than Joshua scored our fourth goal and victory was assured.
The boys were a credit to the school. After the match they shook hands with their opponents and gave them three cheers, and one for luck. Boys, parents and staff were all delighted with the way things turned out.
The Year 5 and 6 football trials will take place this Friday (18.07) for boys and girls.
All children from the current Year 3, 4 and 5 groups are welcome to come and attend trials. The Year 5 and 6 Girls’ Football Club and Year 5 and 6 Boys’ Football Club will train after school. Both clubs have a limited amount of places.
However, anyone who doesn’t get a place in the after school clubs has the opportunity to attend a lunch time B Team Football Club. This club is always well attended and the children get to play a match towards the end of the year. There is still the opportunity to train with the after school clubs if players show good improvement and commitment.
A letter will be sent out to confirm if you have a place.
Congratulations to Ladybirds class in Year 1 for winning the Football World Cup Sweepstake with Germany!
A coach from Chelsea Football Club will be taking the children for an hour training session tomorrow afternoon. The children are very excited!
This morning the Year 5 and 6 Sports Day took place on the main field. There were lots of exciting races in the sprints, and the jumping on the triple jump and long jump was very impressive. Also during the relay races and 800m races the children showed great support and team work.
The final totals of all the events were added together and the results were…
4th place = Yellow House
3rd place = Blue House
2nd place = Red House
1st place = Green House
Well done to all the children in both year groups! The effort and commitment that they put in today was fantastic. Also a massive thank you to all the friends and family who came to support and cheer on the children today!
Year 1 and 2 had a fantastic morning on 25th June! All the children worked well as part of a team and put a lot of effort into each event. The overall winners were the Yellow Team. Well done to everyone who took part !
A group of Year 6 children represented Avenue at a borough dodgeball tournament last week.
Both teams entered played some excellent dodgeball to get through to the semi-finals. ‘Avenue 1’ won the most games in the competition and came top of the group. ‘Avenue 2’ also did very well and came fourth.
Unfortunately ‘Avenue 2’ lost in their semi-final. However they displayed some excellent skills to win third place in the play-off.
After a close game and taking an early lead in the final, ‘Avenue 1’ just missed out on first place .
All children involved should be very proud of themselves, they did a wonderful job representing the school and the quality of dodgeball was very high.
Congratulations to the Year 4 team who represented Avenue at the Borough Finals. The team played very well the previous week to qualify from the group stages to the finals.
On Friday afternoon six teams took part in the finals and Avenue played very well to progress to the overall final. The match went to penalties and unfortunately Avenue lost. However, second place is a great achievement and well do to everyone involved!
