On Tuesday, 9 boys from Year 5 and 6 went to Sutton United to represent the school in football in the borough tournament. First up we played Stanley Park, who are a team we do not face very often. After a slow start, we started to build into the game before Xavier hit the cross bar from just outside the area. Unfortunately, Stanley Park grabbed the match when an attacker lost his marker from a corner and nodded in at the front post. After a rest, the team went back out for the first of back to back matches. Playing St Cecilia’s, the boys started with great tempo and effort putting their defenders and midfielders under a lot of pressure. A good finish from Louis put us 1-0 up at the half before excellent strength and cross from him set up Xavier with a header from close range. Finishing 2-0, we knew we had to win our final game to stand a small chance of making it through the semi-finals! Up against Nonsuch (who had been causing team problems all afternoon) we flew out of the blocks. A strong performance from Jason in midfield meant we kept the ball inside their half, constantly putting them under pressure. A riffled finish from Xavier into the top left hand corner put us 1-0 before Jason scrambled in from a corner. Kian calmly finished when he put through a goal to put us 3-0 up at half time. In the second half, Louis scored after some scrappy play inside the area with the match finishing 4-0, after a superb save from Zac. Then we had a nervous wait to see if we would make the semi finals. Unfortunately, the result in the first match meant we didn’t make it through this time. All the boys showed what they can do. Well done everyone!
A massive congratulations to all the boys who played on Friday afternoon. After a hard training session, the boys started very well and went up 5-0 in the first quarter. Lots of changes and Avenue debuts from many children meant Cheam Field came back into the game pulling it back to 5-5 going into the final quarter. In the last quarter, the players persevered with goals from Dylan and birthday boy Charlie-Ray, sealing a 7-5 win. A great team performance with brilliant effort throughout!
On Friday, the children from Years 4, 5 and 6 went to Overton Park to take part in cross country trials. The children, who are now competing for their class, were very excited at the prospect of showing off their resilience skills when completing TWO huge laps of the field. All the children competed fantastically and a huge congratulations to those who will now represent the school in Cross Country. A special mention to the new Avenue Ambassadors who supported and cheered on all the runners fantastically.
Well done to 6B, 5R and 4B for winning their year groups competitions!
