After a long wait at the start of the season, the Year 5 football team turned up to Sutton United eager to start their cup competition. After a warm-up to brush away the cold, the boy’s started strongly and took a foot hold in the game and created numerous chances. Our set pieces caused the Westbourne defence numerous problems with Daniel delivering to Kayden at the back post hitting the cross bar 3 times. A brief chat at the half and a few changes did not impact the team’s performance and we continued to dominated going forward. A cross from another Daniel gave Zac a great chance but he narrowly missed with his weak foot. As the game seemed to be heading to extra time, Kayden picked the ball up at left back and beat 5 or 6 players before putting the ball between the keepers legs. In the final few moments, Westbourne put the defence under pressure and a few great tackles and strong defensive performances meant we held onto the clean sheet progressing to the next round after the Christmas break.
We took two teams to the Phoenix Centre to take part in a Futsal tournament. The ‘A’ team played 4 matches, they had mixed results, a 2-1 win, 5-1 defeat, 1-1 draw and 5-1 win. The children worked incredibly hard throughout the matches and had a very challenging group. Amazingly they took second place and were awarded with Silver medals.
The ‘B’ team also played 4 matches and had some fantastic outcomes, a 2-0 win, 3-0 win, 1-1 draw and a 1-0 win. The children worked incredibly hard to retain 3 clean sheets due to some fantastic goalkeeping from Maddalena. The ‘B’ team walked away as the champions of their group and won gold medals as a result.
A successful day of Futsal for children new to the sport. First and Second place is an excellent result. Well done to all the children who took part!
The ‘B’ Team football match was played against Cheam Park Farm, we started the game strong with a great formation. After much determination, excellent teamwork and an aggressive attack, we were able to open the scoring up. A strike by Eben gave us a 1-0 lead. Over the next few minutes we looked like the stronger side with attempts coming from Eben, Charlie and Peter. Caught off guard, Cheam Park Farm were able to counter attack and equalise. We were relieved to hear the half time whistle and regroup. After an inspiring half time talk from Mr Brown, we came back and attacked. Again looking like the stronger side, we continued to attack but again were caught on the counter attack. We conceded another goal going 2-1 down. With the final whistle approaching, we needed to score and quickly. Some clever substitutions found Kia’a playing upfront and with seconds to spare Charlie was able to even the scores. 2-2. As Cheam Park Farm kicked off, the final whistle blew. We had managed to find a draw against a very competent side.
Well done to both teams, who have had a strong start to the season, and have won all their matches this season.
The results are as follows:

Avenue won 10-0 (Green)
Avenue won 6-0 (Blue)

On Wednesday 31st October, Avenue Girls Football Team took part in the Danone Cup 7-a-side championship tournament. The girls played excellently but were unable to qualify from the group stages. The highlight of the tournament was when Avenue girls beat Barrow Hedges B 4-1 with Anxhelika (2), Leila and Azera getting on the score sheet. The girls showed excellent sportsmanship and teamwork and I’m sure will learn a lot from this experience! Well done girls! We are proud of you!
